WHITE RANCH

May 8, 1999

The White Ranch meet was set with Scouts in mind, and we did have Scouts. Luckily, unlike the spring meet at White Ranch last year, we did not have two feet of fresh snow. Aside from a little wind, the weather was perfect for a meet. Elis had just finished updating the map, which was important because of quite a few changes in the trails and fence lines that are important for beginner courses. We used a 1:10,000 version of the new map. Beginners had a choice of two white courses of two lengths - many chose to do both courses. The advanced courses were a little shorter in distance than the standard; but that was compensated for in the amount of climb required (lots), so that everyone got a good workout anyway. White Ranch is not an area that lends itself to long courses with little climb. We also concluded that large quantities of lemonade and cookies are beneficial when providing a meet for many young people.

To facilitate beginner instruction, a portion of the map was blown up, and several example controls were placed on it. This allowed the beginners to see what the important features were, or even to do a walk around the controls with an instructor before striking out on their own. Luckily, many experienced orienteers were available to help the beginners. Many thanks to Jeff Hutchinson, Dan Snow, Bob McBride, Bob Ellis, Kathleen Brennan and Sharon Crawford for helping the beginners. Thanks to Mark Hughes, Nancy Butler and Quentin for help with registration and finishes. Thanks to Kenny Craymer for handling the starts. Thanks to Bob Ellis for picking up controls. Thanks to Elis for setting courses and handling whatever came along. And thanks to everyone who came out and had a good time.
