Sons of Norway Barneløpet Ski-O
Snow Mountain Ranch

We had great weather, great snow and a fair turn-out for the Ski-Orienteering meet at Snow Mountain Ranch on Saturday (part of the Sons of Norway "Barneløpet" festivities).

For the 90-minute Score-O, there was a superbly close competition between three strong skate-skiers for the top three places. Sharon Crawford got all 20 controls, but an off-trail short-cut with an unhappy ending caused her to lose a large chunk of time and be a couple of minutes late. Reed Zars returned 17 minutes early, but missed a couple of controls. Bob Annear got all but one control, but was 3 minutes late.

With all of the controls on ski-trails, and more limited opportunities for shortcutting, it should be said that our lone two competitors on snowshoes had quite an uphill battle in competing with the skiers. Next year we’d like to propose to Sons of Norway to run this as a separate distinct RMOC event (still coincident with the Barneløpet), promote it more heavily to orienteers, and also have a dedicated snowshoe course category (SMR is a pretty snowshoe-friendly place).

Snow Mountain Ranch is a wonderful 5100-acre facility located about 15 minutes drive north of Winter Park. With the right coordination with the owner (YMCA of the Rockies), it has winter, summer and even A-meet orienteering potential. Lots of undulating forested areas, not too steep. I need to have a quiet word to Sherry and JP about putting this one on the mapping project list!
