Pre-Registration: Pre-registration is required for this meet. Use the form at the bottom of this page. The pre-registration deadline is Friday, 1/22/2010, at 6:00 pm MST.
Courses: We'll offer Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced courses.
You can use Snowshoes or XC Skis (classic or skate) on all courses. However, please note that snowshoes must always keep to the outer edge of the groomed ski tracks. Snowshoes should not walk in the middle of the ski trails or on the groomed tracks. Devil's Thumb Ranch (DTR) does have some snowshoe trails, but the Course Setter's guess is that you will be using the ski trails more often.
You must visit the controls in the order indicated; this meet will not have a Score-O format.
There are no control descriptions in ski-orienteering, but each control will have a code. Make sure you punch the correct control by matching the code against your map or clue sheet. The controls will be hung next to the ski trails, away from junctions.
There won't be any water or refreshments on the courses, so plan to bring your own (CamelBak or water bottle).
| Course |
Approx. Length (km) |
Description |
| Short |
5.0 |
For beginning skiers who are orienteering for the first time. Also for snowshoes. Each course leg offers a trail choice at a trail junction. Optimal routes are on beginner trails. |
| Medium |
7.6 |
For intermediate ski-orienteers who are at least novice skiers. Also for snowshoes. Each course leg offers moderate route selection opportunities with optimal routes on intermediate or beginner ski trails. |
| Long |
9.8 |
For advanced ski orienteers able to ski on black diamond trails (steep downhills). Also for snowshoes. Each leg can offer a complex route selection (multiple route choices) on any trails. Controls can be placed in areas requiring good skiing skills to punch-in efficiently (for example, on a steep downhill). |
It is possible that all snowshoe trails marked on the map may not have been groomed; some were not groomed last weekend. In either case, there are markers along most of the snowshoe trails.
Devil's Thumb does not have many hills, so the total climb will be rather small. The map has been updated this year with a couple of new trails from last year and again more logging. The mapper has tried to be as accurate as possible with the logging activity; the "scattered trees" symbol is taking over from the forest symbol. In the southern part of the map, there are lots of tall (10 meter) slash piles; these are NOT mapped.
Volunteers: Please contact Bob Ellis if you can help out at the meet --
