[ List of Registered Runners ]
Note: This meet has been designated the Jim Plant Memorial Ski-O and Snowshoe-O.
Courses: There will be one map with 20 controls marked on it, used by both the Ski and Snowshoe participants. ("Western Mass. Rules".) You are to go to as many controls as you wish, in any order. You do not have to declare in advance which course you are doing.
Short Course -- Skis or Snowshoes: Go to any eight of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
Medium Course -- Skis or Snowshoes: Go to any 12 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
Long Course -- Skis or Snowshoes: Go to any 16 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
Extra Credit Course -- Skis or Snowshoes: Go to all 20 of the controls, in any order, and return to the finish.
When you finish, you will be listed in the results on a course depending on how many controls you found. If you found eight controls, then you are listed on the Short Course; if you found 12 controls, then you are listed on the Medium course; etc. Note -- you do not get any extra credit for going to 9, 10, or 11 controls on the Short course, or to 13, 14, or 15 controls on the Medium course, etc.
Participants will be listed in the results by course in order of time taken to get the required minimum number of controls, and whether they used skis or snowshoes.
After you have gone out on skis, you can go out again on snowshoes if you wish, and vice versa.
Both skis and snowshoes can be rented at the Frisco Nordic Center.
Note to skiers and snowshoers: You are allowed to ski and snowshoe off trail. But snowshoers, always walk beside, not on, the groomed ski trails and do not walk on the classic ski tracks (these are the two parallel groves or tracks running on one or both sides of the wider groomed ski trails). This could get us disqualified from using the Frisco Nordic Center in the future! Thank you.
Beginners:
- Beginners are welcome to participate at this event!
- Beginner Instruction will take place whenever we have a group together. Ask at the Registration table.
- For safety reasons, you must report to the finish and turn in your control card even if you don't finish your course.
Schedule: Our standard Saturday meet schedule will be extended a bit to allow participants to do multiple courses, if desired:
| 9:00 am - 1:00 pm |
· Registration in the Nordic Center Lodge for Ski-O and Snowshoe Score-O participants. · Ski-O and Snowshoe-O participants can start on the deck outside the Lodge at any time during this time period. |

All courses close. |
Pre-Registration: If you plan to attend this meet, you must pre-register using the form at the bottom of this page. Pre-registration helps us to estimate the right number of maps to print. Event Fees: Our standard meet fees will apply. A Frisco Nordic Center trail pass will also be required. Trail passes will be discounted for all meet participants (discounted price is TBD, possibly $12; normal price is $17). Notes from the Course Setters:
Come try Ski- and Snowshoe-Orienteering! This is the Scandinavian sport of map-reading and navigation on XC skis or snowshoes. It can be a serious competition for elite skiers, or a fun map-reading excursion for non-competitive participants. In either case, the objective is to read the map provided to you, visit each control location in turn, mark your control card, and return to the finish. A typical Advanced course may take 1-2 hours to complete; less time will be required for for Beginner and Intermediate courses.
All controls will be located on trails. But, back by popular demand, there will be some "bushwhack" possibilities on the Advanced course for those hearty (foolhardy?) souls who want to try cutting through the woods in some places between trails, rather than skiing around.
Controls will be marked on the map with red circles; in the terrain, controls will be identified with orange and white flags.
You can ski any style with any kind of skis. Rental skis and snowshoes are available at the Nordic Center lodge.
Careful map reading and route choice is the key to orienteering. Will bushwhacking save time over a longer route on groomed trails? Can an experienced orienteer out-navigate an expert skier? Come try it and have some fun! Beginners are especially welcome.
