  • Pre-Registration: Pre-registration is required for this meet. Use the form at the bottom of this page. The pre-registration deadline is 9:00 pm on Thursday, February 4th.

  • Beginners: Beginners are welcome to participate at this event! In fact, this will be a great event for orienteering beginners, since it'll mostly be on trails.

Basic Beginner Orienteering Instruction will be offered at 10:30 am; just ask at the Registration table.

For safety reasons, you must report to the Finish even if you don't complete your course.

  • Courses: This meet will have a "Score-O" format with a two-hour time limit. There will be one map with 20 controls marked on it, used by both the Ski and Snowshoe participants. You are to find as many controls as you wish, in any order. You do not have to declare in advance how many controls you intend to visit. Each control is worth one point.

The control locations will be varied so that some controls are suitable for Beginners, while others are more challenging for Intermediate and Advanced participants. The controls will be hung next to the ski trails.

    • Short Course: Go to any eight of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the Finish.

    • Medium Course: Go to any 12 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the Finish.

    • Long Course: Go to any 16 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the Finish.

    • Extra-Long Course: Go to all 20 of the controls, in any order, and return to the Finish.

Attention! If you exceed the two-hour time limit, we'll deduct one point for each minute that you're late.

    · When you finish, you'll be listed in the results on a course depending on how many controls you found, and your total elapsed time. If you find eight controls, then you'll be listed in the Short Course results; if you find 12 controls, then you'll be listed in the Medium course results; etc. Note -- you don't get any extra points for going to 9, 10, or 11 controls on the Short course, or to 13, 14, or 15 controls on the Medium course, etc.

    · After you've gone out on skis, you can go out again on snowshoes if you wish, and vice versa.

    · Skiers may use classic XC skis or skate skis. Both skis and snowshoes can be rented at the Devil's Thumb Ranch Nordic Center. [Rental Details]

    · There won't be any water or refreshments on any of the courses, so plan to bring your own (CamelBak, water bottle, etc.).

    Attention! Trail Requirements:

    • You are allowed to ski and snowshoe off trail.
    • Some trails are one-way only; please follow the direction and do NOT ski or snowshoe against the one-way direction. The map will have directional arrows to indicate the one-way trails, and the courses have been designed so you shouldn't have to go against the flow. (There are a couple of places where you may very briefly pop in and back out a one-way trail, and this is OK.)
    • Snowshoes must always keep to the outer edge of the groomed and classic ski tracks (outside the parallel grooves). Snowshoes may not walk in the middle of the ski trails or on the groomed tracks. Walking on the groomed tracks could get us disqualified from using the DTR Nordic Center in the future. Thank you for respecting this rule.
    • Devil's Thumb Ranch does have some snowshoe trails, but the Course Setter's guess is that you'll be using the ski trails more often. It's possible that all snowshoe trails marked on the map may not have been groomed, but there are markers along most of the snowshoe trails.

  • Schedule:

10:00 am - 12:00 pm · Registration and Starts (Registration will be in the Day Lodge; follow the signs.)
10:30 am · Beginner orienteering instruction (ask at Registration table).
2:00 pm · All courses close. For safety reasons and out of consideration for the event volunteers, you must return to the Finish by 2:00 pm even if you haven't completed your course.

  • Event Fees: Our standard meet fees will apply; please refer to the table below.

Attention! A DTR Nordic Center trail pass will also be required. Trail passes will be discounted to $8 for orienteering participants (normal adult price is $20).

You are free to stay and use the DTR Nordic Center's trails for the rest of the day after you complete your orienteering course.

  • Notes from RMOC:

Come try Ski- and Snowshoe-Orienteering! This is the Scandinavian sport of map-reading and navigation on XC skis or snowshoes. It can be a serious competition for elite skiers, or a fun map-reading excursion for non-competitive participants. In either case, the objective is to read the map provided to you, visit each checkpoint location, and return to the finish. A typical Advanced course may take one or two hours to complete; less time will be required for for Beginner and Intermediate courses.

All controls will be located on trails. But, back by popular demand, there will be some "bushwhack" possibilities for those hearty (foolhardy?) souls who want to try cutting through the woods in some places between trails, rather than skiing around.

Controls will be marked on the map with red circles; in the terrain, controls will be identified with orange and white flags. There are no control descriptions in ski-orienteering, but each control will have a code. Make sure you punch the correct control by matching the code against your map or clue sheet.

Careful map reading and route choice is the key to orienteering. Will bushwhacking save time over a longer route on groomed trails? Can an experienced orienteer out-navigate an expert skier? Come try it and have some fun! Beginners are especially welcome.

  • General Information: Devil's Thumb Ranch (DTR) has more than 100 kilometers of groomed trails. DTR is one of the top-rated Nordic resorts in the country.

Our orienteering map of this area was drafted in Spring 2007 by Jan Lande, with assistance from Brian Coleman. The map is 1:10,000 scale with 10-meter contours.

Snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals are available through the DTR Nordic Shop (970-726-8231 or website).

  • Lodging: To avoid some ski traffic, you might consider driving up to DTR on Friday night and/or leaving early Sunday morning.

    • Affordable lodging options are available nearby in Granby (Homestead Motel) and Hot Sulphur Springs (Ute Trail Motel, Canyon Motel). These motels have small rooms and are nothing fancy; rates are about $60 per night.

    • Another option would be to organize a group to stay at one of the cabins at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, or at one of the DTR cabins.

  • Driving Directions:
    • From Denver, drive west on I-70. Take exit 232 onto Hwy 40. Follow Hwy 40 for approximately 30 miles through Empire, over Berthoud Pass, and past Winter Park and Fraser. About two miles past Fraser, take a right on County Road 83. Take the right hand fork, and follow it three miles to the Ranch.
