  • SATURDAY — TRAINING DAY:

    1. General Information: Participants will be grouped according to technical ability level: Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each group will be guided through a progressive orienteering course designed to give the participants a series of navigational problems to solve.

When you pre-register (below), be sure to choose your ability level carefully as there will not be time to go out in more than one group:

      • Beginner: I am brand-new to orienteering.
      • Advanced Beginner: I have completed a few White & Yellow courses.
      • Intermediate: I can successfully complete an Orange course.
      • Advanced: I am an experienced orienteer who can successfully complete a Green or Red course.

      - The emphasis for Beginners & Intermediates will be on building orienteering skills through practical experience. The focus will be on navigational accuracy, not on speed or distance covered.

      - There will also be training options for Advanced orienteers.

You are welcome to try another course on your own (or in a small group) in the afternoon, after the formal group exercises are finished.

All participants should also plan to attend the orienteering meet at Peaceful Valley on Sunday for extra practice on a "real" course! (See details enclosed below.)

    2. Event Fees: The cost for the training activities on Saturday is $15 per adult (age 21 and older) and $10 per junior (age 20 and younger).

    3. Pre-Registration: Pre-registration is required for this event. Pre-register using the form at the bottom of this page.

    4. Location & Schedule: All of the training events on Saturday will take place at Peaceful Valley's Magness facility, on the west side of the highway. Driving directions are enclosed below.

9:30 am - 10:00 am Registration and check-in. A 100-meter course will be open all day for you to practice pace counting.
10:00 am - 11:30 am Participants divide into small groups by technical level, receive maps & handouts, and get started.
11:30 am - 1:00 pm Lunch & discussion. (Bring your own lunch.)
1:00 pm - 3:30 pm Participants go out again on a more advanced course, alone or in small groups.
3:30 pm Set up camp, for those who are spending the night.
8:00 pm Optional Night-O training in small groups. Beginner course & Advanced course. Bring a headlamp and / or flashlight.

Dinner before or after (bring your own food).

    5. What to Bring: Long pants or gaiters, trail shoes, water, hat, lunch, a small notepad & pen, and a compass. Be prepared for any type of weather; this event will take place even if it rains.

[FAQ Topic: What Type of Compass to Buy for Orienteering]

    6. Volunteers: We'll need experienced orienteers to lead small groups of students through a short course at each level (Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced). Contact Brian Coleman (Meet Director) if you can volunteer on Saturday: email.

    7. Camping: Camping will available on Saturday night for $5 per person. Camping will be in the "Lost Creek" area at Camp Magness (on the west side of the highway); bring your own tent. Showers might be available. Please RSVP to Brian Coleman (Meet Director) if you plan to camp on Saturday night: email.

  • SUNDAY — ORIENTEERING MEET:

    1. General Information: On Sunday, we'll have a standard orienteering meet with a full range of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced courses -- White, Yellow, Orange, Green, and Red. You can find an explanation of the orienteering course color scheme at our FAQs page.

      - The beginner courses (White & Yellow) will be suitable for beginners of all ages -- kids, adults, families, etc.

      - You can complete any of the courses as an Individual or as a Team. (Teams of just two or three work better than large teams.)

      Course Approx.
      Length (km)
      Climb (m) #
      Controls
      Description Water Stop
      on Course
      White 1.5 40 9 Beginner (Short) No
      Yellow 2.6 55 9 Beginner Yes
      Orange 3.7 93 9 Intermediate Yes
      Green 4.7 158 13 Advanced Yes
      Red 6.7 180 15 Advanced (Long) Yes

    2. Course Setter's Notes:

      - All courses will have water, either at a control (White, Yellow, Green & Red), or near an obvious route choice with a small deviation (Orange).

      - Do not get too hung up on whether some piece of rock is a "boulder" or a "cliff". This map contains many, many examples of both. I can feel for the mapper who had to decide which were boulders and which were cliffs, since a large percentage of them are in a gray area between the two feature types.

      - The Green and Red courses will cross barbed-wire fences several times. Be careful not to damage yourself, your clothes, or the fence! The White, Yellow, and Orange courses will not cross any barbed-wire fences.

      - Green and Red runners may encounter unmapped fences.

      - Maps will be 1:10000.

    3. Event Fees: Our standard meet fees will apply on Sunday; please refer to the table below. We accept cash and checks payable to "RMOC". School groups can use our "Request for Invoice" form to be billed after the meet.

  • Driving Directions:

    · From the North (Denver or Castle Rock): Take I-25 south to the Founders Parkway exit in Castle Rock. Follow Founder's Parkway east and then south to Highway 86. Go east on Highway 86 for ~20 miles, through the towns of Franktown and Elizabeth. Just as you approach the town of Kiowa, turn right (south) onto Elbert Road. Continue on Elbert Road for approximately 12 miles until you reach Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. Look for signs on the east side of the road for the main Scout Ranch, or on the west side for the Magness facility.

Note #1: A more direct route is to take Road 17 south out of Elizabeth, Road 106 east to Elbert, and then Elbert Road south to Peaceful Valley. Road 17 and Road 106 have sparse signage, so use this route at your own risk.

Note #2: The 30-35 mph speed limit in Elizabeth and Kiowa is aggressively enforced...

    · From the Northern Side of Colorado Springs: From I-25, take the exit for Interquest Parkway. Go east on Interquest and it will become Highway 83 heading north. Go north on Highway 83 for eight miles to Hodgen Road. Turn right and go eight miles to Eastonville Road. Turn right and go a short distance south to Sweet Road. Turn left onto Sweet Road and go approximately two miles to Elbert Road. Turn left and go 13 miles north on Elbert Road to Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. Look for signs on the east side of the road for the main Scout Ranch, or on the west side for the Magness facility.

    · From Central Colorado Springs: From I-25, take Highway 24 northeast to Elbert Road. Take Elbert Road north for approximately 20 miles until you reach Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. Look for signs on the east side of the road for the main Scout Ranch, or on the west side for the Magness facility.

    · From the East Side of Colorado Springs: From the junction of Highways 24 and 94 north of the Colorado Springs Airport, go east on Highway 24 for 13.6 miles through Falcon to Elbert Road (barely marked with a small green sign).
