Orienteering Meet at Cherry Creek State Park
Sunday, April 30th, 2006 -- Aurora
We had great weather, a great turnout, a great updated map (thanks to Christoph), but not so great swamp! Apparently a planned control location went underwater. And Mike Kloser came back covered in stickers!
It was a bit crazy at first with the signs not up in time and the park telling people to go to Cottonwood Loop in the Campground. If people had my cell phone they got directions! Our pre-printed maps were nice but not everyone got the word to pre-register, so we ran out of Yellow maps even after adding 15 maps to the total! We made do ok when folks who had finished gave up a map or two, and Mark drew some courses on the blank maps. A lot of teams bought extra maps, which is a good thing since the person with the map is learning something. Those without maps are just taking a walk.
We had a record number of little kids on the String Course - a big hit with both kids and parents! My plan is to keep setting the String Course at every meet (that makes sense), so check the website and pre-register so we have enough maps for your kids. If there are parents out there who have better drawing skills than mine, feel free to give me a hand. It's pretty easy to entertain a 3-year-old, as their ability to critique a course is limited to having enough stickers to paste on the map!
The Boy Scouts had a large presence thanks to the publicity at recent Scout Shows. Thanks to Brian Coleman for pitching orienteering to Scout leaders, and thanks to Brian, Brooke Mann and Michael Rounds for working at our booth at the Scout Show.
I'd planned to buy a white Easy-Up style tent, but Costco ran out of them. Instead I bought a well designed screen tent for only 50 bucks. We learned that it's best to stake it down with the doors zipped so it's much taller. Naturally I could walk through the door without bending over -- finally something that works for short people!
Before our next meet on Mother's day I will make another Costco run -- every crumb was eaten -- cookies, crackers and pretzels!
Thanks to all who helped out and thanks to all who joined in the fun! I hope to see you at our next event!
