Orienteering Meet at Observatory
Saturday, October 7th, 2006 -- Nederland
A beautiful fall day in the Indian Peaks. 113 people competed, some more than once, and there were 89 people/groups that started. Nine young children enjoyed the String-O course that they could run on their own (without parental concern) by following the yellow streamer and collecting stickers at each control on their picture map.
It seemed almost all had a challenging but good time. As I have seen before at meets in the Nederland area, people are challenged by the more intricate orienteering that just isn't found in the city/county parks around Denver. I try to make the Orange course forgiving (that is, with catching features beyond the controls, to help relocation after a miss), but off-trail navigation is still a big jump from the Yellow courses.
I am also pleased that many newer orienteerers have a good time on Red, even though their times show they would do better to stay on Orange or Green until they develop better skills. (When I started orienteering in New England, my first meet I did White and Yellow, then spent over a year doing Orange until my times were consistently in the top 2-3 runners on Orange. Then I progressed to the advanced courses.)
I encourage all of you to use RouteGadget (on our website) to share with us your courses, and to study and learn from the route choices that others chose (both good and bad).
There were 25 students of orienteering from Red Rocks Community College, and my thanks to Bill Haas for easing or registration lines by handling the registration of that group.
I heartily thank my wife Libby Ellis, Mil Plant who came from Frisco to help, Brooke Mann for making everything so easy on the website, Brian Coleman for pre-printing the maps, and Sherry Litasi our dedicated president. I also am most grateful for the other volunteers who answered my call for assistance, doing registration, training, control pickup, whatever. They are: Kelly Davis, Judy Campbell, Doug Berling, John Crowther, Michael Rounds, and Geoff Murphy.
