Orienteering Meet at Cherry Creek State Park
Saturday, April 21st, 2007 -- Aurora
The weather began sunny with lots of cyclists to avoid as we made our way to the Twelve Mile picnic area. As the day progressed, the wind picked up, and those of us in the shade grabbed our jackets. It was great for the runners who kept cool -- especially the last water crossing on the red course (or so I heard). After nearly everyone left, the sun came out -- typical Colorado spring weather.
We experimented with two lines at registration and two lines at start and have some kinks to work out. Your suggestions are much appreciated. We had 74 starts -- and definitely more than 100 people showed up. It was a great beginning for the season! With numbers like these we must improve our processes.
We were visited by a freelance writer and two photographers from Rocky Mountain Sports, so look for a future article on orienteering. Maybe you had your picture taken. Hopefully mine won't be used as I was having a bad hair day in all that wind!
We set up control stand samples of several sizes, thicknesses, and materials. Those present ruled out the shorter stands, but we need more input. I'll be bringing the stands and costs to upcoming events and hope for a final decision after White Ranch on May 20th.
The highlight of my day was when three small children thanked me for making the String map and course. I know we missed getting the names of all the kids on the string course, so parents please make sure to give the starter your child's name and age.
I'm in a thankful mood, and must thank John Crowther and Mark Hendrickson for setting and vetting the courses. And thanks to my daughter Tina, who seemed unflappable at registration. We get so busy sometimes that we forget that we are, after all, a volunteer run organization. I was very pleased when several people approached me to ask how they could help. If you have skills to share, or just want to learn, your efforts will be rewarded many times over.
