It was a cold and overcast morning for the 12th Annual Frisco Ski-O meet on Saturday morning, January 20th. However, by 11 a.m. the skies were clearing and temperatures rising for the afternoon Snowshoe Score-O event.
George Bramhall repeated his service as registrar. Betty Bramhall gave beginner instruction and also competed. Mil Plant took care of the start / finish times. Sharon set the three Ski-O courses. Adam Feerst set the course for the snowshoers. Jim Plant printed all the courses.
Late afternoon saw more than twenty tired and hungry competitors enjoying a meal and social time at the Plant's house in Frisco.
Over 0 was raised at the meet and will be sent to Danelle Ballengee's fund to help with her medical expenses.
Sharon Crawford retrieved all the controls at the Frisco Peninsula in one busy five-hour effort on Sunday.
-- Mil and Jim Plant, Meet Directors
The Snowshoe event used a Score-O format. Teams were given 1:30 to get as many controls and points as possible. Controls were worth different point values based on distance, elevation change, and difficulty. Teams could get controls in any order. There were 880 possible points, and 22 controls. The controls were worth 10 times the first digit; e.g., #s 22, 24, 25 & 28 were worth 20 points; #s 31, 33, 35, 36 & 37 were worth 30 points; etc. Teams were penalized for taking longer than 1:30; 10 points per minute or any portion thereof.
Twenty teams, with 25 people, competed in the Snowshoe Score-O event (there were two additional unscored teams). Two people got 18 controls, with JP Ingebrigtsen getting the most points. Sharon Crawford got the most points for women.
One of the goals in setting a Score-O course is to make it so there are no obvious route choices. I try to make it so that you have to think about where to go next from almost every control. This makes it hard to simply follow another competitor for too long. It was fun to see people go off in so many different directions at the start. From what I could tell, no two teams followed the same route. I hope I achieved the goal.
