Notes from the Course Setter:
Control 53 (#5 on orange, #8 on green and #10 on red): I had comments from several experienced orienteers about this control. Some were sure it was in the wrong place (on the ditch further to the north) and lost time finding it, others found it straight away although still thought it was in the wrong place, and others were convinced it was in the right place.
I'd visited this control site three times during course setting. I'd attacked it from the north (via the dark green), and from the trail junction southeast of the control, and I always came to the same ditch end. The vetter had also visited the control site and also hit it dead-on.
When I was collecting controls I attacked it from the building on the southern edge of the out-of-bounds around the airfield and also hit it dead-on. I took a back bearing to the building from this point, and the control was definitely southwest of it (this is the building where the western trail hits the out-of-bounds area). Leaving, I went due south and the control was the correct distance from the trail and tree (i.e., nearer the trail to the south than the building to the northeast).
I admit that the vegetation in this area doesn't match the map very well, which may have caused some confusion. The control was also hung low in the ditch, and you had to actually be in the ditch to see it (i.e., you had to find the feature in order to see the control).
Just a reminder, it is important for competitors to write all their details (including car license and phone number) on both parts of the control card (and both parts should match -- we had one team where the team captain's name was on one part, and the the team name on the other part).
Also, all competitors must report to the finish by course closing time, even if they don't complete their course. These requirements are for the competitors' safety so we know who's still out, and so that we don't start an unnecessary search.
