Training Event at Devil's Thumb

The warm autumn weather this year lasted long enough to provide participants with wonderful conditions for this training event. Two maps were used to increase both the physical and route-planning challenges. A diverse set of control locations and interesting settings made for a wonderful tour. This event emphasized route choice and precise navigation and rewarded those who are strong in both aspects of orienteering. Impressively, two participants found all controls on both maps within the 3-hour time limit and a third one did so coming in a few minutes late. Most of the other participants chose widely varying routes which yielded a spread of several hundred points for the same number of controls reached in many instances. Many participants finished the afternoon at a potluck at Gordon and Nancy's, a just reward for their hard efforts.
