Ski-O & Snowshoe-O at Frisco Peninsula

This was the 13th annual Ski-O and the 6th annual Snowshoe-O event at Frisco Nordic. I’m glad we could continue the tradition in the absence of Jim and Mil Plant, and wish Jim a speedy recovery.
On Friday while Sharon was setting out the controls for the ski courses, I was doing the same with the snowshoe controls. The late afternoon temperature dropped to about 13°F with light snow and wind from the west. Saturday, however, was clear and much warmer than Friday. I had 4 controls left to hang while Sharon organized the registration table. The Nordic Center provided trail passes for a reduced fee of for adults and for juniors. Both the ski and snowshoe courses were available for starts anytime between 10:30 am and about 1:00 pm. Temperature by start time was low to mid 30s with ideal snow conditions.
For the day, we had a total of 13 skiers who had a choice of the Short, Medium, Long, or Extra Credit ski courses. There were 11 snowshoe competitors including Forbes Cone, Andy Kowles, and David Stewart who were equipped with mountaineering skis. Seth Murphy, John Crowther, and David Wilcox competed in BOTH the snowshoe and ski events. The youngest participant of the day was 13-day-old Zoe Bockman, who went for a ride-along with Molly Bockman and Michelle Ellis on the snowshoe course.
The Ski-O courses set by Sharon Crawford were described as follows:
The courses today are a variation of normal orienteering. There are 20 controls on the Ski-O map.
- SHORT COURSE: Go to any 6 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
- MEDIUM COURSE: Go to any 10 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
- LONG COURSE: Go to any 16 of the 20 controls, your choice, in any order, and return to the finish.
- EXTRA CREDIT: Go to all 20 controls.
You do not have to declare in advance which course you are doing until you finish. If you finish with 6 controls, you have done the Short Course; if you finish with 10, you have done the Medium; etc.
The format for the Snowshoe Score-O was a 90-minute time limit to get as many controls as possible (940 point maximum score), with a 5-point deduction for each minute over the limit. I kept the controls fairly close to the established trails due to the deep snow off-trail. The detailed control listing is shown on the Detailed Results Spreadsheet (below).
