Orienteering Meet & Sprints at Observatory
Saturday, June 21st, 2008 -- Nederland
A beautiful day of summer weather was enjoyed by all on the Observatory map. There was lots of excitement, with the advanced folks coming and going frequently as they were running two Sprint courses. Some even ran Orange for a third course of the day.
We had a very good turnout with 95 total starts and 70+ total competitors.
The Sprint format was well received; it gave the opportunity to excel and also the opportunity to lose concentration and time. Some did well on both loops; others did exceptional on one and mediocre on the other. The idea was to have many (13 and 11) controls jammed together in a short distance, requiring speed (because it was so short) but also requiring intense mental concentration, as you were almost always on final approach to a control. It also gave our club members a chance to earn points in the North American Sprint Series.
It was a fun meet to set. It was great to see several REI-newbies and folks returning after the Peaceful Valley training, too. Thanks to the many who helped on Saturday.
