Map & Course Notes from Odd Bersvendsen:
We'll be using a new map based on USGS Lidar data from 2020. The map has 5-meter contours and follows the IOF mapping standard.
The map area is a popular mountain biking destination, and most trails are made for MTB riding but are open for other uses. Some trails and roads are used by motorized recreation and campers. Just be observant when following/crossing trails and roads.
This is moose-country, so do not approach wildlife and hide behind a tree if you get chased by one.
Vasquez Creek is mapped as uncrossable and can run high after heavy rain but is often crossable in August. Only Red and Blue courses cross the creek and there are many big tree trunks that can be used to get over without getting wet feet. The foot/bike bridge over the creek is marked as a crossing point on the Red and Blue courses.
Staging is off Leland Creek Road at the Pinball/Leap Frog intersection. Park on the side of the road without blocking traffic. The Crooked Gravel bike race will be taking place on the access roads to our event so be extra careful driving to the venue. The awards for the race's short course is at 10:30 am so most riders should be done by then.
The temperature in Winter Park is normally pleasant in August with a chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon. There are dispersed camping locations in the area but many sites are occupied this time of year. For more info about the area and where camping is allowed, check out the Motor Vehicular use map.
There are always entertainment and activities in Winter Park this time of year. Check out Music on the Square, at Cooper Creek close to where you turn off of US 40 to get to our venue.
* Light green means slower running and can be walk for less fit runners.
* Terrain is generally rich in detail and boulders less than one meter (3ft) high are not mapped.
* Wetlands and ponds dry up during the summer but are generally obvious even if your shoes stay dry.
* Vegetation and runnability change over the years but the map is your best source of prediction. Smaller areas of downfall or dense vegetation are generally not mapped. Field checking/surveying is an ongoing process in this forest and some parts have not been visited the last two years.
Event Fees: We accept cash and checks payable to "RMOC". We do not accept credit cards, PayPal, or Venmo.
