What is Orienteering?

In orienteering, participants use a map and compass to locate a series of checkpoints shown on a specialized, highly detailed topographic map. Runners choose the route, either on or off trail, that will help them find all the checkpoints (in order) and get to the finish line in the shortest amount of time. Each checkpoint, or "control," is a distinct mapped feature such as a trail junction, a boulder, a hilltop, etc. The controls are marked with orange-and-white flags.

The sport of orienteering requires map reading, problem solving, and quick decision-making skills in addition to athletic ability and general physical fitness. It's an individual sport that builds decision-making, fitness, self-confidence, and leadership skills.

About CSOL

The Colorado Scholastic Orienteering League (CSOL) was created in 2011 to bring together middle school and high school students for healthy competition in the outdoors. The annual CSOL series consists of three meets plus a final championship event, for a total of four events. All high school and middle school students in Colorado and Wyoming are invited to compete for themselves and their schools.

Courses

• Generally, middle school students compete on the Yellow (beginner) course, and high school students compete on the Orange (intermediate) course. Beginners in high school have the option of entering the non-competitive JV category, which uses the Yellow (beginner) course.
• Please select a course based on each student's grade and ability level. The minimum skills that are required for Yellow and Orange courses are described here.

Rules

• Please remind your students that, in order to be eligible for CSOL awards, they must:
  • visit all of the orienteering course checkpoints,
  • in the order shown on the map,
  • as individuals (not in groups).

Entry Fees

• The CSOL entry fee is $10 per person, which includes one map and one e-punch finger stick for timing. There's a $2 discount for any students who have their own e-punch finger stick, which reduces the entry fee to $8 per person.
• RMOC accepts payment at meets via cash, check, or money order. Checks and money orders should be made payable to "RMOC".
• School groups may request to be billed after each meet, for payment by check or credit card. To be billed after a meet, please fill out the "Request for Invoice" form and leave it with Brooke Mann (RMOC Secretary), Doug Berling (RMOC President), OR the volunteer at the registration table.
• Note that we only charge for the actual number of students who attend each meet, not the number you pre-register.

Waivers

• Please have the parent or guardian of every participating student print and sign our 2018 waiver (PDF). Give the signed waivers to Brooke Mann (RMOC Secretary), Doug Berling (RMOC President), OR the volunteer at the registration table. A waiver is required for every participant.
